Fostering Mentorship Through Playwriting
If CLIMB Plays have a history of inspiring youth, how can we propel them towards those actions that benefit themselves, each other and their community?
Over the course of 16 sessions, a professional playwright and CLIMBs actor educators worked with high school students at Washburn and Roosevelt High Schools in South Minneapolis. Over 100 students worked together to write plays that would strengthen the skills of Accountability, Resiliency, Empathy, Accountability, or Self Control (A.R.E.A.S.) for a middle school Audience.
Upon completion, CLIMBs Acting Company performed these plays, for a partnering middle school. Using these plays as inspiration, the Middle School students took on that same task for an elementary school audience. In May, CLIMB actors will perform these plays for partnering middle schools.
The curriculum can be adapted for all age groups and integrated with any curricular goals that already exist in the classroom.
