Teaching Company Scheduling Guidelines

Overview:

You will need to prepare and submit a class schedule no later than two weeks before your residency is scheduled to occur.  We recommend preparing and submitting the schedule as early as possible to avoid any last minute stress.  This schedule will list the time, room number, teacher, number of students, and number of students with special needs for each classroom session.

What to do:

  1. Read carefully through the Teaching Company Scheduling Guidelines (below).
  2. Download the scheduling guidelines, a sample schedule, and a schedule template by clicking here.
  3. Consult with your teachers and fill in the blanks on the schedule template.  If you have difficulty complying with scheduling guidelines, write your problem on your schedule template and complete the schedule as best you can.
  4. Either email the completed schedule to CLIMB's Teaching Company Director at james@climb.org or fax it to CLIMB at 651-453-9274, with the words, "Teaching Company Schedule" in the fax subject line.
Teaching Company Scheduling Guidelines:
  • No more than 7 classes can be scheduled in a day.
  • No more than 35 students may be present for each class.  If we can conduct the classes in a multi-purpose room, there can be up to 40 students present.
  • No more than 4 classes can be scheduled before lunch.
  • A 30 minute lunch must be scheduled around midday.
  • Each class for students in grades kindergarten and above should be no shorter than 40 minutes long.
  • A class schedule must allow for 5 minutes between each class and before and after lunch.
  • A teacher must be present for the entire class.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):

Q:  Why can't we have more than 35 kids in a class?
A:  Classes conducted with more than 35 students are problematic in terms of classroom management.  Furthermore, due to the highly interactive nature of our classes, students in an overly large class will not benefit as much from the activities.  CLIMB will occasionally grant exceptions to this rule and allow up to 40 students.  If you feel you need to add extra students to a class, please print your reason on your submitted schedule.  If that class can be conducted in a multi-purpose room, it will be easier for us to facilitate and easier for the students to fully participate in movement-based activities.  NOTE:  CLIMB will make the final determination as to whether an exception is acceptable.

Q:  Why can't we schedule more than four classes before lunch?  And why do Actor-Educators need 30 minutes?
A:  Because of the highly physical and energized methods used by CLIMB Actor-Educators, we request that schools do not schedule more than four classes before lunch to prevent performer fatigue.  We request 30 minutes for lunch -- with five minutes of passing time at the beginning and end -- for the same reason.  CLIMB will occasionally permit exceptions to this rule.  If you feel you need to schedule a shorter lunch or more classes before lunch, please print your reason on your submitted schedule.  NOTE:  CLIMB will make the final determination as to whether an exception is acceptable.

Q:  Why do you need five minutes between classes?
A:  CLIMB classes involve props, costumes, and music, and classrooms are often far apart.  We require at least five minutes between classes to find the next classroom, catch our breath, and and set up the costumes and props.

Q:  Does a Teacher Inservice or a Community Parent Event count as one of our seven allotted classes for a day?
A:  Yes.

Q:  Why do you need our teachers to stay in the classroom?  It's a great time for them to get other things done!
A:  While CLIMB Actor-Educators are trained in classroom management techniques, if a student becomes ill or disruptive during a class, the presence of the classroom teacher is imperative.  Furthermore, it is our hope that your teachers will follow up our class after we're gone, which they can't do if they didn't witness the class.  Please inform your teachers of this guideline.
